Sometimes I prefer to read a brief list of salient points rather than a wordy essay.
Let’s see how this one goes.
- There are a large number of peace organisations throughout the world, each with different aims and objectives, but all with one single major, all-important goal – a more peaceful world.
- Peace organisations need to cooperate with each other and focus our demands on governments to bring about the changes that we want to see.
- This year we can coordinate around “Invest in Peace”, which is the theme chosen by the UN for 2026/7 in its International Day of Peace.
- Our objective should be to get a reasonable percentage (for example 1-5%) of the global budget invested in war (which is $3 Trillion per year and rising) to be invested in peace.
- Investment in peace is incomparably more efficient in both real values (that is, human and environmental values) and also monetary values than investment in war.
- Investment in peace can be spearheaded by international diplomacy led by finance ministries in democratic countries reaching out to finance ministries in countries with whom they are in tension (e.g. between UK and Russia).
- The objectives of the communications will be to realise the financial (and human) advantages of military de-escalation when compared to military escalation, which will lead to mutually advantageous peace-building between the nations.
