81 years ago, August 6th 1945, one atomic bomb wiped out the city of Hiroshima. Humans in the city that were not vapourised instantly were smashed and burned to death. Those that were not killed were condemned to leukaemia and cancer.
Commentators and influencers will tell you that, regrettable though the use of atomic bombs was, it was necessary to bring World War 2 to a speedy end. Those who read the book “Brighter than 1000 Suns” by Robert Jungk and who argue that Japan was beaten and knew it was beaten are shouted down as “revisionists”.
Here is a list of comments opposing the use of the bombs by people who were not revisionists, but high level actors and decision makers at the time, whose opinion is far more valuable than 2006 employees of mainstream media. People like Eisenhower, Hoover and MacArthur.
Whatever historians conclude, the inescapable fact is that politicians have ordered the use of nuclear weapons once, in 1945, and, despite the loud protestations of today’s commentators and politicians about the absolute necessity of nuclear deterrence as an insurance policy, and its purpose as a deterrent, not an instrument of war, the other inescapable fact is that nuclear deterrence is capable of failure, that therefore a nuclear is possible, and therefore we must get rid of nuclear weapons completely once and for all.
