Keiko Fujimori has a choice – to revert to her father’s right wing policies, which included extrajudicial killings, corruption and many civilian deaths, or to choose her own path and seek to unite her deeply divided country.
She has promised a higher minimum wage, which is a good start, but also harsher sentencing, which is not necessarily a good policy, especially if it is misapplied to political opponents, and if prisons become places where human rights are abused.
Peru needs to become politically united. Unity grows out of political wisdom and cooperation in a common task. The common task facing us all, Peru included, is ecological. If we humans can focus on addressing our ecological problems, focusing on water, food, shelter, clean energy and rational waste management, our social and political problems will fade away into the background.
Keiko should look towards Costa Rica for a model for Peru.
